The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby qualifies as a 2013 blockbuster. It was a dazzling 3D adaption of F Scott Fitzgerald's seminal novel about the Roaring Twenties. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the millionaire Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as his lost love Daisy and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, the film is "timely" in it's criticism of wealth. It has a kooky soundtrack produced by Jay-Z, and amazing special effects. It opened to $51 million, which was the third biggest opening ever for a film that didn't open at number 1 on its given opening weekend, behind Sherlock Holmes and The Day After Tomorrow.

The Great Gatsby movie poster helps it to be a blockbuster. First of all, the Roaring Twenties art deco style is featured behind the main characters and their names. Right then and there, setting and characters are established. Also, the picture of the glasses in the background comes from the cover of F Scott Fitzgerald's original book, so people who enjoyed the book will want to see the movie.

The advertising and trailers for the Great Gatsby also contribute to making it a blockbuster. Throughout the trailer, you can hear snip-its of the incongrous and energetic modern soundtrack by Jay-Z. Also, the tone throughout the entire thing is upbeat and exciting, attracting many of the movie-goers. At the end of the advertisement, it says, "See It In Real D 3D", which is a characteristic most all blockbusters must have.

An element from the film that really helped it to become a blockbuster was the music. The album, executive produced by Jay-Z, moved 137,000 copies, and 119,000 copies of the total copies sold in the first week were based on digital downloads which made the album debut at number one on the Digital Albums chart. With this, the album gained the largest digital sales week for a soundtrack.
